A 5 cent shorted fuse can really cost you

OK! ...

Don't Blow a Fuse!

We all know, when it comes to a blown fuse, 90% of the down time is finding out the fuse is blown. 10% of the downtime to replace it. If you don't stock a certain fuse, the percentage might be 80/20. Business Industrial Network helps you reduce that 90% with technical help to find that the fuse is blown. We also want to help with that extra 10% downtime when you don't have an exact fuse match in stock. That's what this page is for.

Advice:

  • Do a fuse audit. This way you will not have downtime waiting for a fuse to be purchased, or extra downtime occurrences do to incorrect fuse usage.
    • Documented cases show savings of $27,000 (based on T&M only. If "True cost of downtime" was calculated, true savings would be much higher.)
  • Use Littelfuse's fuses with indicator
    •  Shows which fuse is blown at a glance. This results in quicker maintenance, less downtime and better safety.

Fuse Types:

Motor&Transformers Applications: You need time delay fuses or Class "C" to handle start up current.

(JTD,FLNR, FLSR, IDSR,2CO, 2CC,CCMR)

Branch Circuit Applications: You need fast acting fuses that should be the HRC** type.

(JLS, JFC,KLNR, KLSR,NLN, NLKP, NLS,JLLN, JLLS,KLKR)

Capacitor Applications: You need current limiting HRC** fuses.

(Any current limiting HRC** fuse of proper value)

Miniature and low Voltage Circuit Applications:

(Too numerous to mention here, see a great online resource at Wickmann.)

**Note: HRC= High Rupturing Capacity-A precisely rated fuse which will operate under high fault current conditions, without self-destructing.

Online Resources:

FuseTek out of Canada has some excellent resources. They have a DOS based program to select fuses and show coordination with overload relays. Also contains a quick short circuit calculator. In .zip format. They also have a Windows based cross reference program. (Make sure you right click the previous link, and click "Save As". Otherwise just left clicking link will automatically start to install program on your computer.) FuseTek also has an OnLine calculator for fuse protection calculations.

Wickmann has On-line Library, “Fuse-Links”, Design Center, FAQ, and a Glossary.

For technical information on fuses, see the Reference Library at South Bank University of London. There you will find an on-line library containing information about a complete range of building services systems. Including LV Switchgear, Systems Available and Applications, HRC fuses, Standards (British, Combined, International), Legislation, etc.
