Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (MSIE):

MSIE can be downloaded at either www.download.com or www.microsoft.com.

Zip Files

You will need a program that can help you deal with .zip files that are prevalent on the Internet. Zip files are files that have been compressed for ease of storing and transferring files between and on computers. When you receive a compressed or "zipped" file, you will need to be able to ‘unzip’ them.

WinZip:

By far the best program for ease of use dealing with zipped files. WinZip can be found at either www.download.com, or http://www.winzip.com/, from there, choose "Download Evaluation Version". Follow the directions to download the file, and once it is on your hard drive, install it by double clicking on the file "winzip95.exe". If you were using a 16-bit operation system, you would download the 16-bit version of WinZip, and then execute "winzip16.exe".

PKZIP:

One of the oldest zip programs out there, not as easy to use as WinZip, but far more robust. You can find it at either www.download.com or http://www.pkware.com/.

Virus Scanners

A virus scanner is very important if you tend to receive files from friends or colleagues, or download files from the Internet. It will help prevent the risk of downloading anything from that Internet, which could potentially damage your system. There are several virus protection programs available to download free.

Norton Virus Scan:

Probably one of the best, and most trusted names in virus protection, can be found at either www.download.com or from Norton’s web site, http://www.symantec.com/.

F-Prot:

This popular virus protection program can be found at www.download.com.

McAfees VirusScan

Another leading anti-viral program that can be found at www.download.com

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

FTP is the best way to send and receive files from the Internet. Many web sites that offer files do so through an FTP site. There are a few good FTP clients available for you to download and use on the web. We have included two of the best known below.

WS_FTP Pro:

This program is a robust ftp client, can be found at  Download FTPPro

Cute FTP:

Cute FTP is another fine FTP client, and can be found at either www.download.com or HTTP://www.cuteftp.com/.

Graphic Programs

You will always have need for a good picture file editor, something that can handle jpg, bitmap as well as gif images. There are numerous programs out there, ranging from free basic image editors to high priced image rendering software. We suggest starting with the one below. It is available as shareware, and can be downloaded from www.download.com.

Images and Color

You can get help with background images and colors at ColorMaker. Gif wizard will show how to make those files small enough to save space on your WEB sight. Your trip around the WEB in search of graphics would not be complete without a stop at the Icon Factory and the free Iconz site.

Paint Shop Pro

Paint Shop Pro is an award-winning image-editing tool that supports more than 30 image formats and several painting and drawing tools. The program is one of the easiest and most powerful, you may ever use for image viewing, editing, and converting.

Newsgroup Readers

Newsgroups are a system of many groups that people from all over the world can post messages and reply to others' messages. There are many different newsgroup readers. Remember posting to Newsgroups with a valid email name leaves you open to receive automated junk mail. A trick to trip those junk mail robots up is to add a space in your email address before the "at" (@) sign.

Example: user_@domane.com

Deja News

Deja News is actually a search engine. We mention it here because it’s a great way to read news of interest from all news groups at one time, via the World Wide Web. If you register with them, then you can reply to messages also. Although it will be slightly slower, depending on your hardware, it makes for the most powerful Newsgroup reader.

Free Agent:

Free Agent is a robust newsgroup reader that can be configured in many ways. It provides multi-pane viewing, and news can be read online or offline. Other features include flexible article purging, database compacting, carbon copying for email and article posting, editing of all fields, and canceling of posts. You can get Free Agent at www.download.com.

Smart NewsReader:

The Smart NewsReader is an application that talks TCP/IP protocol to an NNTP news server and provides access to Usenet newsgroups. In addition to many standard newsreader features, the Smart NewsReader incorporates two information management technologies that make the task of traversing large newsgroups easier. You can get Smart NewsReader at www.download.com.

WinVN Newsreader:

One of the more popular newsreaders, WinVN is a Windows-based newsreader. Like other newsreaders, it can be used to select, view, write, sort, and print Usenet news articles. However, WinVN also allows the user to easily navigate between newsgroups and articles via its point-and-click interface. It allows the viewing of multiple articles simultaneously on multi-tasking operating systems like Microsoft Windows/NT. You can download WinVN Newsreader from www.download.com.

Search Engine Registration

Selfpromotion.com is by far the best advertising site you can find. The more sites/search engines you register with the less information you have to enter. This site keeps a database of the information you entered and automates filling in forms to register with the various sites. The resources are amazing, not just search engines, there is registries, awards request, press releases, etc. The site keeps track of what sites you’ve done and the status, not to mention priceless first hand advice on each site. You can tell the WEB designer of "Self promotion" is honest. He only requests $10 to keep your information longer than two (2) weeks. If you only want to use it once, it’s free. However, we’re sure once you see how this complete promotional management site is set up, you’ll want to use it all the time.

"Submit It" is another way to promote your site. They automate submission of your Web address to up to 220 Internet Search Engines and Directories.
